Weber State’s Finishing Kick Defeats Idaho State, 27-24

Mike Minnoch kicked a 44-yard field goal with one second left to give Weber State a 27-24 Big Sky Conference victory over Idaho State on Saturday night at Ogden, Utah.

Weber State (2-1, 1-0 in the Big Sky) reached the Bengals’ four-yard line with 1:14 left but but Morgan Welch fumbled and Rafe Hewett of Idaho State recovered with 1:14 to play.

But Jeff Main fumbled the ball back to the Wildcats with 25 seconds left to give Minnoch, who kicked a 27-yarder earlier, a chance for the game-winning field goal.

Derek Poole rushed for 163 yards in 22 carries and Welch added 82 in 17 and touchdown runs for seven and eight yards.

Cole Cooper completed 19 of 31 passes for 264 yards and a 36-yard touchdown to Poole.

The Wildcats held Nick Whitworth, who averaged 247 yards in Idaho State’s first two games, to 60 yards. Whitworth scored on runs of one and seven yards.

Kevin McCarthy of Idaho State (2-1, 0-1) completed 23 of 39 passes for 280 yards and a touchdown but threw two interceptions.

Idaho State rallied from a 17-0 deficit late in the second quarter.

New Mexico 45, Northern Arizona 14--Ted Iacenda scored his first touchdown since transferring from USC to help the Lobos win at Albuquerque, N.M.

Iacenda, from Hart High, rushed four times for 37 yards and caught five passes for 82 yards and a 39-yard touchdown from Eric Jaworsky as New Mexico (1-2) built a 31-0 halftime lead.

“Now we have a block to step on and we can build from there,” Iacenda said. “We feel good about what we accomplished tonight. Obviously, we’ve got a lot of mistakes to correct but you don’t want to start 0-3. This was huge for us.”

Ronny Jenkins, from Hueneme, was held to 36 yards in 14 carries but caught five passes for 80 yards and a 43-yard touchdown from Travis Brown for the Lumberjacks (1-1).

Brown completed 14 of 26 passes for 186 yards and two touchdown.

Cal Poly SLO 40, Montana State 37--Craig Young ran for touchdowns of one and 25 yards in the second half and the Mustangs held off the Bobcats in the final minutes at San Luis Obispo.

Young rushed for 191 yards in 34 carries and caught for passes for 56 yards to help Mustangs beat a Big Sky team for the first time in two seasons.

Montana State (2-1) trailed, 40-22, but made it close on when Brandon Vancleeve caught a one-yard touchdown pass and Vaughn Jarrett intercepted a pass a returned it 78 yards for a touchdown.

Andy Jepson competed 11 of 20 passes for 136 yards and a touchdown and ran one yard for another Cal Poly touchdown.

Dusty Broderick of Montana State completed 17 of 24 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown.

CS Sacramento 48, UC Davis 27--Ricky Ray passed four touchdowns and the Hornets scored a nonconference victory at Sacramento.

Ray completed 19 of 27 passes for 377 yards with no interceptions. His touchdowns of 13 and 37 yards to Scott Towne in the second and third quarters pushed Sacramento (2-1) ahead after UC Davis (2-1) took a 14-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Charles Roberts rushed 211 yards and scored a touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a five-yard run to push Sacramento’s lead to 34-20.

Sacramento rushed 219 yards, compared to 70 for the Aggies.
