Injuries Put Hurt on Line, Secondary

Share

UCLA continues to be plagued because of injuries to several starters, including two in places they can least afford it, the offensive line and secondary.

Jason Bell, the starter at cornerback the first two games, has been ruled out for the second game in a row because of a heel injury. It has been plaguing him since the spring, when he missed drills after having a bone spur removed.

Guard Mike Saffer is still out because of a sprained ankle. But Brian Polak, sick enough with flu Saturday against Fresno State to be forced out in the first quarter, practiced Monday.

Danny Farmer also worked out, but the Bruins plan to keep him out of one-on-one drills with defensive backs to reduce the bumping on his left ankle. He is listed as probable for Saturday’s Pacific 10 Conference opener at Stanford.

Defensive tackle Pete Holland is questionable because of a lower-back injury that kept him out of the Fresno State game.

Among the reserves, receiver Cody Joyce is probable after suffering a concussion Saturday and linebacker Billy Pieper is doubtful because of a sprained knee.
