DUCKS REPORT : Selanne Upset by Lack of Effort

Teemu Selanne did not fault King defenseman Aki Berg for the third-period collision Monday that opened a cut above the Duck winger’s upper lip and required several stitches to close.

But Selanne ripped the Ducks for their emotionless effort during an 8-1 exhibition loss at the Great Western Forum.

“I stepped on his stick and I fell down,” Selanne said when asked about Berg’s check into the boards with the Kings ahead, 7-0. “I don’t know if he punched me in the back of the head or he fell on top of me, but my visor got pushed down and cut me. It was an awkward play. He’s a Finn and he knows he can’t touch me.”

Selanne laughed for a moment, but grew serious when asked about the Ducks’ lackluster performance.

“First of all, it was the worst we’ve skated all year,” he said. “They were pumped and excited to be playing the last game in their building and we weren’t even there. There was a dead feeling in our dressing room before the game. I don’t know why.

“Obviously, it was embarrassing and we got frustrated. I hope it was a wake-up call. We were so bad, it was a joke.”

The Ducks held a players meeting immediately after the game, resolving to play with more emotion in the future.

“This was the first time after a game that we talked [without the coaching staff present] about what we have to do to be better,” Selanne said.
