Eric Carter, who rides for Santa Ana-based GT Bicycles, finished third in the elite downhill at the World Mountain Bike Championships Saturday in Are, Sweden.

Carter, a former Huntington Beach and Newport Beach resident who now lives in Temecula, finished 7.88 seconds behind champion Nicolas Vouilloz of France. France’s Mickeal Pascal finished second. Brian Lopes of Laguna Beach finished 23rd.

Carter, a former BMX national champion, won the 1999 World Cup dual slalom title.

Leigh Donovan of Capistrano Beach finished fourth in the women’s elite downhill, less than three seconds behind bronze medalist Sari Jorgensen of Switzerland. Anne-Caroline Chausson of France won the gold medal.

ULTRA SHOW

The North Face store at Triangle Square in Costa Mesa will host a slide show and lecture by ultramarathon runner Dean Karnazes at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

By that time, Karnazes should have recovered from running in The Relay, the 199-mile ultra race from Calistoga in the Napa Valley to Santa Cruz over the weekend. The Relay course is usually tackled by teams of 12 runners, but Karnazes’ team has only two other runners.

Still, compared to the 1995 relay, this should be a cruise for Karnazes. That year, he ran the distance on his own, finishing what was then a 195-mile course in 57 hours 54 minutes 7 seconds.

Karnazes, who lives in San Francisco, has finished more than 50 ultra races in his career, including four events of 100 miles or longer in the summer of 1997.

The slide show and lecture are free and there will be a raffle for a pair of trail running shoes. The North Face is at 1870-A Harbor Blvd. More information: (949) 646-0909.

STARTING UP

A Snail’s Pace Running Shop in Fountain Valley will start another 13-week fitness training program for beginning walkers or joggers Oct. 19.
