Loara and El Modena hoped to bounce back from the humiliation of last week, when both teams lost and neither scored.

Loara was successful as quarterback Jeremy Ellis completed seven of 12 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-0 nonleague victory over the visiting Vanguards on Thursday night at Glover Stadium.

Loara wide receiver Rudy Acosta scored the first two touchdowns. His seven-yard run up the middle concluded a seven-play, 71-yard drive 5:39 into the opening quarter. His next score came with 2:10 left in the first quarter on a 44-yard pass from Ellis.

Acosta had two receptions for 61 yards for Loara (2-1), ranked ninth in Division VI. El Modena fell to 0-3.

Billy Chavez added the next two Loara touchdowns, both in the second quarter. He scored on a 19-yard pass from Ellis and on a 21-yard run.

Chavez finished with 14 carries for 116 yards.

The Saxons’ speedy defense limited El Modena running back Lee Tousignant to 38 yards in 24 carries and gave up 67 total yards in the game.

“Our defense played well, they came ready to play,” said Loara Coach John deFries, whose team lost, 35-0, to Mater Dei last week. “They made their minds up that they were going to do something.”
