3 Aftershocks of ’94 Temblor Shake Area
Three aftershocks of the 1994 Northridge earthquake rattled the San Fernando Valley shortly before midnight Saturday night.
According to Caltech seismologist Nick Scheckel, a quake with a magnitude of 1.6 struck at 11:46 p.m. A 1.4 tremor followed at 11:50. The largest of the three aftershocks, with a magnitude of 2.9, occurred at 11:57.
The epicenter of the aftershocks was two miles north-northeast of San Fernando.
No injuries or substantial damage was reported.
The Valley aftershocks were dwarfed by a 4.3-magnitude quake that struck Sunday morning near the California-Nevada border.
A new quake, not an aftershock, the temblor hit at 9:15 a.m. It was centered 20 miles north-northwest of Stovepipe Wells, a Caltech spokesman said.
Sunday’s quake was followed by a 4.0 aftershock at 1:15 p.m.
