The Civic Light Opera is one step closer to putting on a 2000 season.

The 1999 season was canceled when the group could not meet the production costs, which range between $20,000 and $30,000 for each performance.

But a dinner and auction last weekend raised $14,000 for the theater group, launching plans to continue intensive fund-raising for an upcoming season.

“That’s our goal,” said Sue Fenwick, who hosted the dinner. “We still have a ways to go, but we’re thrilled with the success of this event.”

More than 130 people flocked to Fenwick’s home Saturday night for dinner and a silent auction.

The food was purchased, prepared and served by volunteers.

All the proceeds from the event will help fund the next season of the local community theater, which was founded in 1985 by Virginia DeLand. She said the group has not set a definite fund-raising goal for the year, but they hope to put on two to three programs.
