The Full Measure of Opinions on F

Share

* The way I read Measure F is that it was a compilation of NIMBY items covering jails, hazardous waste landfills and civilian airports.

There is no doubt that no one item would have been approved on its own; otherwise the measure would not have been written this way.

It would be interesting to know the popularity of each of the items rather than assume that all the votes were against an airport.

* Well, reality takes a while to dawn on some folks. The more that Supervisors Charles V. Smith, Jim Silva and Cynthia Coad intentionally ignore Measure F’s message, the less credibility county government will have.

It’s time for the folks in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa to realize Measure F protects them as well and stop supporting a lost cause that would potentially make things worse, not better, for them.

Measure F clearly indicated that the super-majority disagrees with county policy on an El Toro airport and no one wants to face a similar fate in their future.

It’s easy to ignore the message when it doesn’t come from home, but to believe 67% was a fluke or did not have anything to do with the airport is to be purposely and conveniently ignorant. Every sign and flier clearly stated, “Stop the Airport.”

If the county leaders really want a true referendum on El Toro, they should immediately look at the Millennium Plan and give the voters a real choice rather than supporting another “airport or nothing” measure.

Let’s see if they can lead now instead of follow special-interests’ whims.

* Who would have ever thought that we would find Orange County’s wealthy and powerful Republican elite, fronted by the Board of Supervisors’ majority of three, in bed with organized labor unions?

It reeks of political corruption.

This appears to amount to a payoff of county construction projects in exchange for the unions’ support for the international airport proposed for El Toro.

Now, after the election, their decision to press ahead against the will of two-thirds of the citizens shows them to simply be three toadies of the Newport Beach wealthy and elite.

* Frank Alvarez and Dick MacNair seem to be under the misguided opinion that Measure F protects us against the expansion of John Wayne Airport (Letters, March 12).

That is not true.

Option F in the county’s master plan triples the flights out of John Wayne and allows for Boeing 747 and 767 aircraft, but does not expand the airport past existing property boundaries. This is the preferred fall-back position for no El Toro airport.

Therefore, there is no protection for us lucky cities surrounding John Wayne. And since the closest house to the runway at El Toro is six miles away, and my house is only one mile from the John Wayne runway, I guess the only thing I have to thank you for is a stronger possibility that there will be three times more flights over my house.

This, all because of a NIMBY attitude. So, thanks for nothing.

* Measure F’s spending restrictions are perfectly clear to everyone except the majority of the county Board of Supervisors.

I am certain that the voters in Orange County will remember the board majority’s decision to challenge Measure F’s provisions, come election day.
