His right knee needs arthroscopic surgery to repair damaged cartilage.

His right hamstring gives him occasional problems and he was slowed by a sinus infection for much of last week.

Yet, Clinte Motley of Cal State Northridge set another school record in a nonconference men’s track and field meet against Iowa, Wyoming and host UCLA at Drake Stadium on Saturday.

Motley, a 6-foot-2 junior from Alta Loma High, bounded 52-7 1/4 to win the triple jump in the meet that was scored as a quadrangular and as a series of dual meets.

Motley’s mark broke the Northridge outdoor record of 52-6 1/2 set by John Haynes in 1977 and helped the Matadors finish second behind UCLA.

UCLA had 203 points in quadrangular scoring, followed by Northridge at 133, Wyoming at 130 1/2 and Iowa at 101 1/2.

UCLA defeated Northridge, 105-68, in dual-meet scoring and the Matadors beat Iowa, 95-67. Wyoming was not involved in the dual-meet scoring because the Cowboys did not field full teams.

Motley leaped 22-9 3/4 to place second in the long jump.

“I admit that I was frustrated [after the long jump],” Motley said. “But I just went back and talked to some of my peers. They got me laughing and that got me to relax for the triple jump.”

It was the third school record of the year for Motley. He set indoor marks of 52-9 1/2 in the triple jump and 7-3 in the high jump in February.

Billy Bush of Northridge won the hammer throw with a career best of 201-11, finished second in the shotput at 60-4 3/4 and fourth in the discus at 167-5.

The Matadors won four individual events as junior Annetta Wells ran 24.11 in the 200, senior Nancy James clocked 2:09.16 in the 800, senior Nancy Dollar timed 9:55.9 in the 3,000 and freshman Dee Scott leaped a career-best 19-5 1/4 in the long jump.

The 400 relay team of junior LaShaunda Fowler, senior Anicia Rimm, sophomore Krystal Harris and Wells won in 45.67.
