The MetroStars (1-1), who drew an announced crowd of 27,322, were playing their first home game since signing German national team star Lothar Matthaeus. They got goals from Alex Comas, Brian Kelly and Valencia.

Around the League

Major League Soccer is applying to the U.S. Soccer Federation to run a Division I professional women’s league.

John Hendricks, founder of the Discovery Channel, said last month he had raised $40 million, mostly from television companies, to make a bid for a league that would be called Women’s United Soccer Association.
