Cypress Strikes Late for Victory Over Fullerton

The Cypress College baseball team has recently made a habit of saving its best for last.

The Chargers scored three ninth-inning runs to defeat Fullerton, 7-4, Saturday in an Orange Empire Conference game at Fullerton.

Earlier this week, Cypress scored three runs in the ninth to give Coach Scott Pickler his 500th victory at the school.

After Cypress scored in the eighth to take a 4-2 lead, Fullerton scored twice in the bottom of the inning, tying the score on Shaun Beutner’s RBI single.

Daylon Monette put the Chargers on top for good in the ninth with a two-run single that made Ray Aguilar (6-1) the winner. Reliever Brandon Luna picked up his seventh save.

The third-place Chargers (21-5, 8-5) trail conference leader Santa Ana by 3 1/2 games. Fullerton is 11-16 and 4-9.

In other Orange Empire Conference games:

Santa Ana 10, Golden West 6--Carlos Pasillas had two hits, both doubles, and four RBIs to lead host Santa Ana (23-2-1, 12-3). C.J. Wilson had two hits, including his seventh home run of the season, and two RBIs for the Dons.

Jeremy Weinberg gave up 12 hits and four runs with four strikeouts in seven-plus innings in his seventh victory of the season for Santa Ana.

Josue Pena had four hits, including a double for Golden West (14-13, 5-8).

Saddleback 8, Orange Coast 7--Jason Reuss hit his 10th home run of the season for Saddleback (16-10, 6-9) in the top of the ninth inning with one runner on. Host Orange Coast is 9-17, 3-10.

In the Ventura softball tournament:

Cypress 3, Cuesta 1--Yvette Martinez had three hits, including a double and a triple for Cypress (22-5). Martinez also drove in two runs with a hit in the second inning of the Chargers’ 10-4 victory over San Diego Mesa. Teammate Erica Duncan had three hits and three RBIs for the day.
