Something’s Fishy at Hansen Dam

Share

Hansen Dam Aquatic Center will be making a splash Saturday with its first catfish derby and trout tournament.

Last summer, the city unveiled two sparkling new lakes--one for fishing and one for swimming--at the recreation area, revitalizing a north Valley park, once notorious for gangs and drug dealing.

Don’t know how to fish? Not to worry. Lessons will be provided by the California Department of Fish and Game, which is co-sponsoring the event with the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks. Fishing rods are also available.

To compete, a valid California fishing license is required for anyone 16 or older.

Officials will award trophies for the heaviest catfish caught between 8 and 11:30 a.m. Contestants can compete in the 6 and under, 7 to 11, 12 to 15, or 16 and older categories.

Prizes will also be given to any angler who catches a tagged trout on the day of the tournament. Free T-shirts go to the first 300 anglers who register.
