DEAR SOS: I’m hoping you can get the recipe for the cabbage soup served at the Lyons English Grill in Palm Springs.

MRS. JOSEPH DIGANGE

Los Angeles

DEAR MRS. DIGANGE: The Grill’s chef, Ernie Carino, was flattered that you asked. Canned tomato juice, cream of tomato soup and ground beef make this recipe so easy, a can’t-cook cook will have no trouble getting the soup just right.

Lyons English Grill Cabbage Soup

Active Work Time: 20 minutes * Total Preparation Time: 1 hour

1/2 to 3/4 pound ground beef

1 onion, sliced

2 cups chicken or beef broth

3 cups tomato juice

1 (11-ounce) can cream of tomato soup

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon sugar

5 to 6 cups shredded or diced cabbage

Salt, pepper

* Saute ground beef in large pot over medium-high heat until browned, 5 minutes. Add onion and cook until translucent, 5 minutes. Add broth, tomato juice, tomato soup, garlic powder, sugar, cabbage and salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil. Cover and simmer until cabbage is very tender, about 20 to 30 minutes.
