Green Line Plans Don’t Go Far Enough

Share

* I was very excited to read in James Flanigan’s column that planning was going ahead to extend the Green Line into LAX [“Small-Town Thinking Can Jam Region’s Air Traffic,” On Southern California, March 22].

I hope that with this, interest will grow for a direct connection between the Green Line and Metrolink. The original plan was to extend the Green Line east to the Norwalk Metrolink station. The projected $600-million-plus price tag for this extension has put the project on hold indefinitely.

However, it would be far cheaper to extend Metrolink to the Green Line using existing, publicly owned rail lines.

One such line is used by the Union Pacific Railroad for harbor-bound trains coming from downtown Los Angeles. A new joint station with the Green Line just east of the Long Beach Freeway would open direct connection from downtown and any Metrolink trains extended south of Union Station.

This route also opens up possible connection to the Long Beach Airport, which this railroad also serves.

Another line comes right next to LAX and the Green Line. This line could bring passengers up from the harbor area.
