Concordia Sweeps Hope International

Jane Padilla’s single in the fifth inning drove in the winning run as Concordia defeated Hope International, 4-3, to sweep a Golden State Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Concordia Saturday.

Concordia (20-21, 9-11) trailed in the second game after Hope International’s Kim Bento hit a three-run homer in the first inning.

But the Eagles chipped away with runs in the second, third and fourth to tie the score, 3-3, going into the fifth.

Andrea Castillo (7-5) relieved Carrie Shankles in the first inning.

In the first game, Concordia got late heroics from Crystal Rosenthal, whose RBI single in the bottom of the 10th gave the Eagles a 3-2 victory.

Shankles (7-7) went the distance. Hope International is 17-19, 6-12.

In other Golden State Athletic Conference softball games:

Vanguard 1-0, Biola 0-1--Cheri Smith’s eighth-inning bunt single got through Biola’s infield and enabled Jill Jessen to score from second base, helping Vanguard upset Biola (31-12, 10-8) in the first game. Alysia Atchley (5-12) pitcheda five-hitter for the Lions.

Vanguard appeared to tie Biola in the eighth inning of the second game on a sacrifice fly, but Erin Gomez was called out for leaving third base early, ending the game. Jessen had two hits, including a double, for Vanguard (19-26, 6-12) in the second game.

In the UC San Diego track and field invitational:

UCI’s Turpin wins two events--Annmarie Turpin won the 200 meters in 25.40 seconds and the high jump (5-4 1/4) and Courtney Baird won the 3,000 meters (10:11.75) for the third-place Anteaters (131 points).

The UC Irvine men finished fourth with 81 points.

In the Fresno Pacific track and field invitational:

Concordia men set records--Bruce Hockless set a meet record with a mark of 49 feet 11 3/4 inches in the shot put and Mike Avellan ran a meet-record 9:07 in the 3,000 meters. Hockless also won the discus with a mark of 132 feet 4 inches.

Concordia’s Tricia Mattson also set a record, running the 800 meters in 2:16.6. The Eagle men’s and women’s teams each finished fourth in the team standings.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s tennis:

Vanguard 9, Westmont 0--Stefan Johansson led Vanguard with a victory in No. 1 singles, beating Jon Ryan Schlobohm, 6-0, 6-2. Johansson teamed with Ollli Helminen to win in No. 1 doubles.
