1 Girl Shot by Father Dies, Other’s Condition Critical
A 2-year-old girl shot in the head by her father Monday near Lake Elsinore has died of her injuries, and her 6-year-old half-sister remains in critical condition, authorities said Wednesday.
The gunman, Onesimus P. James, 36, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the incident, which concluded a three-day reign of terror in which he allegedly held his girlfriend captive, repeatedly beating and raping her.
The 2-year-old, Corrynn Benard, died late Tuesday, the Riverside County coroner’s office said.
Her sister remains hospitalized at the Riverside County Regional Medical Center.
James held the girls’ mother captive over a three-day period at their home in a rural neighborhood between Perris and Lake Elsinore.
After she escaped Monday afternoon and called for help, sheriff’s deputies found James dead.
Both girls had been shot in the head.
