The former head of a California state finance commission has been charged with evading $79,000 in federal income taxes, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Gail Greer Lyle concealed her income in foreign bank accounts and ensured that no W-2s were prepared in her name for three years while serving as vice president and assistant treasurer of a Miami development company, the indictment charged.

Lyle, who served as executive director of the California Commission of State Finance in the early 1990s, made an initial court appearance Wednesday in Washington and waived removal to Miami.

She surrendered her passport and was freed on $250,000 bond.

The commission provided opinions on revenue projections to the state treasurer’s office until it lost its funding in 1993 in a dispute between then-Gov. Pete Wilson, a Republican, and Democratic Treasurer Kathleen Brown.

The three-count indictment covered unreported income from 1993 to 1995.

If she is convicted, Lyle could face as much as 15 years in prison and a $300,000 fine.
