* The Ventura Mariners won the National Junior B hockey championship with a 5-4 victory over the Iron Range, Minn., Yellow Jackets on Tuesday in Blaine, Minn.

Darren Partch scored in overtime on an assist from Sam Kyzyk for Ventura (35-0), which won the Western States Hockey League title for the third time this season. The Mariners lost last season in the tournament semifinals.

Partch, who led all scorers in the tournament with eight goals and eight assists, had a hand in all the Mariners’ scoring against Iron Range.

He assisted Matt Little to open the scoring, assisted Manu Mau’u in the second period for a 2-1 lead, scored a power-play goal on assists from Shawn Smith and Cale Finseth for a 3-2 lead in the second period and assisted Dave Brown in the third period for a 4-3 lead.

Brown finished the tournament with five goals and four assists, and Finseth had three goals and four assists.

GOLF

* Manny Hayes finished with a 54-hole total of 214 to help Cal State Northridge tie for first place on Tuesday in the Grand Canyon Invitational at Goodyear, Ariz.

Paul D’Ambra, Anthony Marciano and Lance Domborski all finished at 220 for Northridge, which tied Santa Clara. Tim Wren was at 226.

John Davis of Grand Canyon won the individual title at 212.

BASKETBALL

* Greg Patterson has been hired as boys’ coach at Viewpoint School in Calabasas.

Patterson was co-coach with Howard Abrams at Montclair Prep last season.

He helped coach the Mounties to the Division V state championship in 1995.

BASEBALL

* Jeremy Gonzales, a senior pitcher at Village Christian High, signed Wednesday with St. Mary’s College.

Gonzales is the first baseball player from the Sun Valley campus to sign with a Division I school.
