A livery cab driver shot early Friday morning was the sixth driver killed this year, prompting Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani to create a grant program to help the drivers install partitions or cameras.
The Police Department has created a task force to investigate the homicides. An arrest has been made in only one of the slayings.
Police said the earlier cases appeared to have been motivated by robbery. But the driver killed Friday, Luis Francisco Perez, had cash on him after he was killed.
