Meeting Planned on Stalled El Toro Airport

Share

Acknowledging for the first time that planning for an El Toro airport has ground to a halt, Orange County supervisors Tuesday set a May 3 workshop to consider how and whether to move forward.

At the workshop, supervisors will decide what to do in the event that an airport can never be built at the 4,700-acre former Marine base.

The action by the board represents the first time since the airport planning process began that board members have agreed to reconsider its direction for the property.

Chairman Charles Smith wants to hear presentations by county staff on all options and how best to go forward with base reuse.

Smith has not ruled out an airport but said non-aviation programs can at least move forward while the court clarifies whether Measure F, approved by voters that halted airport spending, is constitutional. No court date has been set.
