Barry Bonds scored five times, something he hadn’t done in nearly seven years. Kirk Rueter pitched in relief, something he hadn’t done in nearly five years.

And the San Francisco Giants won a game, something that hadn’t happened in 11 days.

The Giants overcame their most embarrassing inning of the season and ended a losing streak at seven games Tuesday night by beating the Reds, 13-9, at Cincinnati for their first victory since April 7.

“Seems like a long, long time but hey, man, it’s over now,” Giant Manager Dusty Baker said. “Now we’re starting a road trip and we’re 1-0. I hope that will be our only bad stretch of the year.”

Two San Francisco errors helped Cincinnati score seven times on only two hits in the third, when the Reds pulled ahead 8-4 with their biggest inning of the season.

New York 10, Milwaukee 7--Robin Ventura’s 14th career grand slam carried the Mets to a win over the Brewers at New York.

Winning pitcher Mike Hampton, who lost four games in 26 decisions last year for Houston, again struggled with his control. That led to Hampton (1-3) giving up tworuns in the second inning when he walked the bases loaded, and another run in the eighth when he forced in a run on a bases-loaded walk.

The hot-hitting Ventura, who had six RBIs Sunday against Pittsburgh, connected in the fourth inning against Jaime Navarro (0-3). Navarro gave up nine runs and nine hits in four innings.

Arizona 7, Colorado 1--Bernard Gilkey hit a two-run homer and Armando Reynoso shut down his former team for eight innings at Phoenix.

Reynoso (1-2) gave up three hits, walked two and struck out two.

Florida 12, Pittsburgh 5--Rookie Brad Penny allowed three runs in seven innings, and eight players drove in runs for the NL East-leading Marlins at Miami.

The Marlins moved atop the division during a 4-3 trip, their first winning road swing since last June. Florida had the worst record in the major leagues the last two seasons.

St. Louis 5, San Diego 4--Andy Benes overcame a shaky start at St. Louis for his first victory and Jim Edmonds had three hits and two RBIs at St. Louis.

Benes pitched five scoreless innings after allowing two runs in the first.

Edgar Renteria had two doubles and a home run for the Cardinals, who have hit home runs in 10 consecutive games and have a major league-leading 34.

Montreal 4, Chicago 3--Sammy Sosa and pitcher Kevin Tapani homered for the Cubs, but Orlando Cabrera’s run-scoring single in the seventh inning lifted the Expos to a come-from-behind victory at Montreal.

Sosa hit his fourth home run of the season, a towering shot to center field in the third.
