Cook and Bauer Reach Semifinals

Lester Cook of Calabasas and Derrick Bauer of Marina del Rey defeated Dillon Brozyna of Wesley Chapel, Fla., and Jordan Dolberg of Pembroke Pines, Fla., 6-4, 6-1, in an Easter Bowl Junior Tennis Championships boys’ 16 division quarterfinal Wednesday at the Riviera Resort and Racquet Club in Palm Springs.

Cook and Bauer, the third-seeded team, plays unseeded Eric Hodgman of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Stephen Rozek of Chardon, Ohio, at 1:30 p.m. today.

The No. 7-seeded team of Philip Sheng of Thousand Oaks and Chad Harris of Aurora, Colo., advanced to the quarterfinals in boys’ 18 doubles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Daniel Friedman of Gainesville, Fla., and Jeremy Wurtzman of Rochester, N.Y.

In singles play, No. 9-seeded Theresa Logar of Rochester Hills, Mich., defeated eighth-seeded Brooke Borisoff of Agoura, 6-3, 6-2, to in the round of 16.

No. 15-seeded Ryan Redondo of Ojai upset eighth-seeded Sam Warburg, 6-2, 6-7 (8-6), 6-2, in a boys’ 18 round-of-16 match. Redondo plays No. 2-seeded Robby Ginepri of Marietta, Ga., at 11 a.m. today.

BASEBALL

* Outfielder Mike Serrata of Hueneme High has made a commitment to attend Cal State Northridge.

Serrata is batting .549 with eight doubles and seven triples.

FOOTBALL

* Matthew Hicks, All-City running back at North Hollywood High, has received an appointment to the Air Force Academy, where he will join his brother, Jonathan, a former Husky lineman.

SOCCER

* The North Valley Fury under-15 boys’ team won the CYSA South State Cup on Sunday in a shootout over Santa Clarita Elite. The teams played to a 2-2 tie through overtime.

Victor Cisneros of Sylmar made the decisive penalty kick on the Fury’s sixth shot.

Jackie Lawlor of Woodland Hills score both Fury goals. Noah Lane of Sherman Oaks and Jared Thornton of Lake View Terrace assisted Lawlor.

* The inaugural Los Angeles Kings High School Ice Hockey All-Star game is scheduled for 7:15 tonight at HealthSouth Training Center in El Segundo.
