A man suspected of domestic violence was wounded after barricading himself in his home and exchanging gunfire with police, authorities said Friday.

James Shea, 58, of Chatsworth was listed in stable condition Friday at Northridge Hospital Medical Center.

The incident began when officers responded to a domestic violence call about 7 p.m. Thursday at the house on Devonshire Street. Shea’s wife said he was in the house and armed with a handgun, police said.

Officers contacted Shea by telephone and tried to persuade him to leave the house, but he “repeatedly opened the front door and threatened to shoot the officers,” authorities said.

A SWAT team surrounded the house. About 11 p.m., Shea stepped outside and fired at officers, police said. Three SWAT officers “simultaneously returned fire, striking the suspect,” according to a written LAPD statement.

Shea was arrested and will be booked on attempted murder charges, police said.
