Funding for Park Program Renewed

A program that has allowed 2,000 low-income urban dwellers to visit the Santa Monica Mountains and rim parklands has received renewed funding, officials said.

The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority has received a grant of $17,800 from the Los Angeles County Public Works Department, said Melinda Barrett, a county public works spokeswoman.

Funds for the transportation program come out of the county Proposition A sales tax. During the past two years, the agency transported nearly 2,000 people to parklands, Barrett said.

Buses pick up groups of people at community centers, schools, churches and other centers in Los Angeles and in unincorporated county areas. Groups pay $100 for administration costs to receive the service, said Janeen Parker, chief of education at the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority.

“There are a lot of people who live in parts of the county who wouldn’t be able to come to parks without [the transportation program],” Parker said.
