A 71-year-old retirement home resident in Cudahy was found slain on his kitchen floor Saturday night, after neighbors burst into his apartment to save him from a fire that had been deliberately set, police said.

Alphonso Vigil already was dead when smoke alarms went off just before 7:45 p.m. and alerted others at the Clara Park Commons Retirement Apartment House of the fire inside his home, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman said Sunday.

Police did not release details on how Vigil was killed and on possible suspects.

Three other Clara Park residents suffered minor injuries during the Saturday blaze, county fire officials said.

They were taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood and treated for smoke inhalation before being released, hospital officials said.

Confined to Vigil’s apartment, the fire caused about $6,000 in damage, county fire officials said.
