Distinguished Elementary Schools

Much of the discussion of public education focuses on the weak and ineffective schools. But each spring the state’s Distinguished Schools program shines a light on the strong and worthy. On May 5, representatives of 233 schools judged to meet the program’s criteria will be honored at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. Seven hundred elementary schools (next year middle schools and high schools will compete) submitted applications for the recognition. Each school was visited by educators from the state Department of Education to review the information the schools submitted. The schools had to be in the top half of the state’s academic performance index. In addition, they had to demonstrate a high degree of parental participation, staff commitment and community involvement. The schools chosen also have made an investment in improving the skills of teachers and administrators.

In addition, 49 middle and high schools have been nominated to receive designations as National Blue Ribbon Schools. Recipients of that honor will be named later in May.
