Newport Harbor Clinches Golf Title

The Newport Harbor golf team, ranked fourth in Orange County, clinched at least a tie for the Sea View League title by defeating Irvine, 182-198, Wednesday at Oak Creek Golf Club.

Medalist Jake Allanach made three birdies and shot a two-under 34 for the Sailors (15-2, 6-1), who finished two-over as a team. Sophomore Dan Kush made two birdies and finished at 35.

John Friedman and Mike Finney each had a birdie and shot 38s for No. 7 Irvine (11-6).

In Century League boys’ swimming:

No. 3 Villa Park 133, Santa Ana Valley 36--Charlie Fisher won the 100 freestyle (50.98) and 100 backstroke (59.67) and sophomore Mark Liao recorded a personal best in the 100 butterfly (55.90) for the Spartans (10-0, 5-0).

In Century League girls’ swimming:

No. 7 Canyon 139, Orange 25--Erin Volcan set a school record in the 200 individual medley (2:07.18) and also won the 50 freestyle (24.58) for Canyon (9-1, 5-0), which finished its second consecutive undefeated season in league.

In the Sea View League

No. 3 Newport Harbor 104, Aliso Niguel 45--Sophomore Carly Geehr, who transferred from Pasadena Mayfield last fall, set a school record in the 500 freestyle (4:55.12), breaking Kelly Long’s 1982 mark by more than a second. Geehr also won the 200 freestyle (1:52.38).

Geehr was also on the winning 200 freestyle relay with Amy Murphy, Jenna Murphy and Nicole Mackey, which also set a school record, finishing in 1:42.57, more than two seconds ahead of the 1995 mark.

In Golden West League boys’ tennis:

Santa Ana 17, Westminster 1--Santa Ana (20-0, 12-0) won its first league title since 1982. Gilbert Teran won in singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-0 and finished the season 60-8.

In Golden West League boys’ volleyball:

Tustin 3, Saddleback 1--William Diep had 24 kills and six blocks for Tustin (14-0, 10-0), which won, 15-6, 7-15, 15-5, 15-4.

In the Sunset League:

No. 1 Marina 3, No. 9 Fountain Valley 2--Jeff Wootton had 44 kills and 11 blocks and Steffin Rangel had 19 kills and 13 blocks for host Marina (12-1, 7-0), which rallied to win, 15-4, 10-15, 15-17, 15-13, 15-12 to clinch a share of the league title.

Tommy Plass had 21 kills and Nathan Hagstrom had 20 for Fountain Valley (7-4, 4-3), which was tied, 11-11, in the fifth game before Marina put it away.
