200 Expected for ‘Sober Day’ Trek
About 200 people--including at-risk youth and first-time offenders--are expected to participate Sunday in the fifth annual Sober Day L.A. Walkathon to raise money for drug, alcohol and violence prevention programs.
Participants will trek from points north and south to converge on the Van Nuys Civic Center for an afternoon of multicultural activities, said Rachel Cosmic, founder of New Era Relief Sober Link Educational Programs, which is sponsoring the event.
Those who want to walk the farthest--eight miles-- will meet at 8 a.m. at Memory Gardens, across from the San Fernando Mission in Mission Hills, and leave for the Panorama Mall at 9 a.m. From there, they will join other walkers in the three-mile trek to the Civic Center, departing at 11 a.m.
Another group of walkers will meet at 10 a.m. at North Hollywood Park, leaving at 10:30 a.m. for the five-mile trip to the Civic Center.
Events will include performances by ballet folklorico dancers, gospel singers, drill teams, and Korean and Thai dancers.
