* David Frum’s “Case Built on Lies and More Lies” (Commentary, April 25) is in itself loaded with half-truths which, literally, turn white to black. Example: The statement “Cuba is a country where children lose their milk ration when they turn 7 years old” really smacks of an uncaring dictatorship. While it is true that milk is limited to children under 8 years old (and adults over 65, which he ignores), Frum does not tell the reader that because of the embargo, Cuba cannot buy milk from the U.S. and there is a severe shortage. The Cuban government has, wisely, decided to make it available only to those who need it the most. However, anyone may purchase milk, subject to its availability, after children and seniors are taken care of.

* I am really happy to see the Republicans so concerned over the plight of poor immigrant children. I am looking forward to the Republican-led Congress sponsoring bills to increase the welfare benefits to families with small children, re-fund after-school programs that have been gutted, support living wages so their families can adequately care for them and regulate the health care industry so they can afford health care.

I bet they’d be willing to say they were communists if it would help.

* If a 6-year-old cannot be held accountable for shooting a first-grade classmate in Detroit, how can 6-year-old Elian be deemed competent to decide whether he should have political asylum?
