Reservoir Fish Stunned to End Up as Nature Lessons
Hundreds of catfish, carp and large-mouth bass living in a reservoir off Ball Road were stunned by an electric shock and transported to a Garden Grove lake late Tuesday, Orange County Water District officials said.
The district relocated the fish to a lake used by local nonprofit groups to teach children from low-income families about fishing and nature.
The fish were rendered temporarily immobile using a special boat that sends a current into the water.
The stunned fish floated to the surface and were netted and loaded into special tanks on trucks to be transported to a pond commonly known as West Haven Lake at Chapman Avenue and West Street.
“We have [fish] available, so we’re donating them,” district spokeswoman Jenny Glasser said.
Glasser said the district hopes to transfer more fish in the future.
Most of the fish swam from the Santa Ana River into the Anaheim reservoir, which is used to replenish an underground water basin, Glasser said.
The Garden Grove Rotary Club helps sponsor programs that offer fishing lessons to children in the area.
The programs draw children mainly from schools in the neighborhood, said organizer Jesse James.
