New Director Sought for Valley Fair

The San Fernando Valley Fair manager and chief executive announced her resignation this week, ending 15 years of service, as board members launched a search for a new director.
Dale Coons was appointed to the 51st District Agricultural Assn. Board of Directors--which operates the fair--in 1985 by then-Gov. George Deukmejian. She was elected manager and CEO five years later.
Coons established the Valley Fair academic rodeo that promotes competition among students and helped expand educational partnerships with schools throughout the Valley to give students the opportunity to submit and display crafts and science projects.
“Her shoes are going to be very difficult to fill,” said Board of Directors President Rob Wilcox. “I believe that her direction, her leadership and creativity really brought this fair into the [new] century.”
Wilcox hopes that Coons’ torch will be passed on to a person with “enthusiasm and passion for the fair, and leadership qualities from someone who can work well with all the community groups.”
The Board of Directors intends to fill the position by the end of September. The application deadline is Aug. 21.
