Concerned about a possible decline in scientific education, the Irvine Ranch Water District has decided to donate $500,000 to the science specialists program in Irvine Unified School District’s elementary schools.

The water district, which announced the move last week, also will provide as much as $250,000 in additional grants to match community donations, district officials said.

The science specialists program gives students in fourth through sixth grades experience with labs and demonstrations. The program serves all 22 elementary schools in Irvine and teaches 5,000 students each year.
