Volunteers Sought for Adobe Tours

Share

Olivas Adobe Historical Park needs volunteers to serve as guides and historical interpreters for public tours. A four-week training session for those interested in becoming docents begins Sept. 5.

Participants who complete the course may join the Olivas Adobe docents, providing tours as part of the many cultural events held at the park for children and adults.

The course consists of lectures covering the Rancho era and the history of Ventura County, workshops on corn grinding, adobe brick-making, games and interpretive skills, and a field trip to El Presidio State Park in Santa Barbara.

“We do the training twice a year,” said Richard Newsham of Ventura Community Services.

“When we have docents lead people through the house we want them to know all about it and it gives people the the opportunity to learn more about Ventura’s history.”

Classes are held on four consecutive Tuesdays beginning Sept. 5 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Olivas Adobe Historical Park, 4200 Olivas Park Drive, Ventura. Cost for the course is $10. Participants should bring a bag lunch.
