Riptides

Re “High Surf Keeps Area’s Lifeguards Busy,” Aug. 2: When conditions are so dangerous that there are close-call rescues of small children “that spooked us in the headquarters bad,” wouldn’t it be a good idea to have someone at the entrance to Zuma Beach (or any beach) advising families to take extra precautions?

Many families probably don’t know what riptides are, or that the yellow flag flying on the lifeguard tower can be a warning of such. The information in your article could be printed (in English and Spanish) on a flier and given out as cars stop to pay the entrance fee. Extra fliers could be available at the towers and posted in the restrooms for those who park free on PCH.

In addition to possibly saving lives, wouldn’t it also make the lifeguards’ jobs a little easier by reducing the need for rescues?
