The Uruguayan navy was searching Sunday for three sailors missing after a collision with a Panamanian freighter that killed eight others aboard their ship.

The navy minesweeper sank after being split in two by the 24,000-ton freighter Saturday afternoon, officials said. The accident took place during thick fog but under normal sea conditions 11 miles off the port of La Paloma, which is 188 miles east of Montevideo, the capital.

In addition to the eight killed, 13 sailors were treated for injuries after reaching shore in emergency craft, naval Capt. Raul Lecumberry said.
