State Grants $25 Million for Roadwork in City

The city of Los Angeles will receive about $25 million in state funds to resurface and reconstruct 80 miles of streets as part of Gov. Gray Davis’ Transportation Congestion Relief Plan.

The city’s Bureau of Street Services will develop a list of projects and is expected to submit its report next month.

The projects should be completed by next July, according to a press release from the mayor’s office.

Despite the extra funds, the money is still far short of funding necessary to address a backlog of 4,000 miles of streets that need to be repaved or rebuilt because the system has long been neglected.

Many of the streets in need of repair are in the northeast San Fernando Valley and south Los Angeles, said David Gershwin, spokesman for Councilman Alex Padilla, whose district includes the northeast Valley.

The 2000-01 city budget already includes 245 miles of street resurfacing and reconstruction projects.
