Laker star Shaquille O’Neal’s check for $42,893 to buy a new Los Angeles police patrol car was formally accepted by the city’s Police Commission on Tuesday.

O’Neal sent the check two days after leading the Lakers to the NBA championship in June to replace one of two police cars burned when a downtown fan celebration turned to vandalism.

The Lakers organization also sent a check for the same amount last week to pay for another replacement vehicle, team spokesman John Black said.

In addition to the two patrol cars burned, roving celebrants also damaged two television news vans and vandalized some downtown businesses. Eleven people were arrested, but no serious injuries were reported.
