Larger Mosque Proposed for Site
The Mohammedi Center Anjuman-e-Burhanee congregation is proposing to build a 7,500-square-foot, two-story structure on its Platt Avenue property, officials said.
Men would worship on one floor of the mosque, and women on the other, said Alain Bally of Bally / Taylor Associates, a land-use consulting firm that is representing the Islamic congregation.
Currently, men and women take turns worshiping in the mosque’s existing 4,500-square-foot building.
Membership is expected to remain about 490 after the new building is completed. Three years ago, the congregation bought the site at 5701 Platt Ave., which had been the site of a Lutheran church.
On Wednesday night, the Woodland Hills / West Hills Neighborhood Planning Advisory Council discussed the project at the Platt Library. Another public hearing will be held within two months, Bally said.
During the meeting, residents supported using the site for a religious purpose, but expressed concerns about the structure’s design and the possibility of additional noise and traffic, officials said.
If approved, construction would start in four months and the project would take a year to 18 months to complete.
