IRVINE
Irvine Unified School District trustees unanimously approved nearly $1 million in mello-roos tax relief at their Tuesday meeting.
The district uses the tax, which falls on new developments in the city’s northern villages to repay bonds issued to fund new school buildings. Since no major construction is planned for the coming year, board members said they could afford to reduce the tax.
Owners of homes, apartment buildings and condominium units in the mello-roos area will pay special taxes ranging from $418 to $575 for 2000-01. Compared to their 1999-00 taxes, the special tax represents a savings of about $80 to $110 per property.
Hotels will pay $79 to $416 less than the previous year. And mello-roos taxes for industrial, office and retail buildings will range from 18 cents to 20 cents per square foot, about 4 cents to 7 cents less than in 1999-00.
Overall tax savings for the community-facilities district amounts to about $937,500.
