Bay Area Rabbi Named Southland Board Chief
A Bay Area rabbi who has also served congregations in Washington, Philadelphia and New York has been named as the new head of the Board of Rabbis of Southern California.
The appointment of Rabbi Mark S. Diamond as executive vice president of the board was made this week by John R. Fishel, president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles. The board of rabbis is a federation agency.
Diamond, 46, will succeed Rabbi Lawrence Goldmark, who has been serving as acting head of the board.
“We wanted a rabbi sitting with us at the management level of our federation,” Fishel said. “This helps to create a very much welcomed synergy between the federation and the synagogue community.”
Diamond has served on the board of directors of the Jewish Federation of the Greater East Bay. He founded “Why Be Jewish?” conferences in Oakland and is the author of numerous articles on Jewish life and thought.
Diamond received a master’s degree in Jewish studies and rabbinical ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York. He is also a graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. He is married and the father of three children.
