Swing

Get ready to cut a rug! The Royal Crown Revue performs Sunday in Newhall. Since the late 1980s, this group has been at the forefront of the swing music revival. Besides its music, the horn-driven Los Angeles-based ensemble is known for its snappy 1940s-style attire.

Jazz

Tommy Newsome, formerly of the “Tonight Show” band, will give a free concert in Woodland Hills. On the “Tonight Show,” saxophonist Newsome spent years being Doc Severinsen’s sideman and substitute as band leader and Johnny Carson’s comic foil. Newsome steps to the front of the stage Sunday.

Pops

The Burbank Chamber Orchestra performs Sunday in the Starlight Bowl. Conductor and music director Steven Kerstein will lead his ensemble in a program of popular and light classical pieces. Cellist Cecilia Tsan will be the featured soloist in the “Rococo Variations” by Tchaikovsky. Other classical pieces scheduled are Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” and Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Capriccio Espagnol.” In addition, a Broadway medley, music from “Star Wars” and swing numbers made famous by Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and the Dorsey Brothers will be performed. The concert will conclude with the rousing “Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa.

Folk

The California Traditional Music Society will host a “Picnic and Jam in the Park” Sunday in Encino. The society, which sponsors the annual Summer Solstice Festival, has recently established a new folk music center in Encino Park. Bring an instrument or a blanket, or both.
