Getaway Driver Is Convicted in Slaying of Grocer
The driver of the getaway car used in the shooting death of a popular South-Central grocery store owner was convicted Friday of murder.
Pablo Hernandez, 32, is expected to be sentenced to life in prison without parole on Sept. 27 for gunning down Chung Bok-Hong on Feb. 3, 1999, in front of the 54th and Van Ness Market.
Hong, 52, called “Mama” by her customers, was shot as she and her husband and son returned from the bank with a bag of money. The son, Edward, was shot in the leg as he struggled with one of the robbers in the store parking lot. The robbers fled with the bag.
The suspected triggerman, Juan Roman Carlos, 31, is still a fugitive.
Hernandez also was convicted of attempted murder, robbery and a special circumstance allegation of committing murder during a robbery.
