Ventura High Grad Gets $100,000 Scholarship

* Joseph Warren Fuentes, son of Ernesto and Beverly Fuentes of Ventura, received a Naval ROTC, Marine Option Scholarship valued at more than $100,000. Fuentes, a Ventura High School graduate, will attend Carnegie Mellon University’s Institute of Technology on full scholarship to study mechanical engineering. Upon graduating, Fuentes will serve as an officer in the Marine Corps for four years.

AAUW Honors ‘Woman of Achievement’

* American Assn. of University Women, Simi Valley branch, honored Anne Les with its Woman of Achievement award for 2000. Les holds membership in the Lompoc/Vanderberg and Simi Valley branches and has held numerous board positions. She was honored for her “commitment to the association’s goals of promoting equity for women, education and self-development . . . and positive societal change.”

The association’s Simi Valley branch also announced the winners of its $1,000 scholarships. They are: Lindsey Wander, Brooke Fineberg and Jonquil Urdaz, all from Royal High School; Mary Kipp, Simi Valley High School; Jessica Resnic, Moorpark High School, and Brandy Lara, Moorpark College.
