* “Warsaw Tries to Polish Up a Stalinist-Era Eyesore” (Aug. 13), about the Warsaw Palace of Culture and Science, cites numerous Polish voices to emphasize this point: That Stalin’s “gift” to the Polish capital of this socialist realist architectural monstrosity came at a high price, communism.

What the article fails to see is the symbolism of this 760-foot-tall structure, begun in 1952, completed in 1955. By 1945 Warsaw had been literally flattened into rubble by the Nazis. Like it or not, the palace represented rebirth.
