Mall Prospects Improve, Mayor Says
City leaders worried about the financial future of the Edwards movie theaters here can take some solace from news that some major department stores are studying a possible move here, Mayor Bill Davis said.
Robinsons-May and Macy’s are analyzing Simi Valley’s demographics to determine whether it would be feasible for them to anchor a regional mall that city leaders hope to attract, Davis said.
The news comes as Edwards movie executives filed for bankruptcy protection this week. It’s not known whether the movie chain will close the Edwards 10 theater on Los Angeles Avenue, as company officials did in April when they closed the Edwards 7 theater in Simi Valley.
Edwards officials are studying all of their remaining facilities to determine which ones should be shut down as they work to pay off the company’s debts, a company spokeswoman said Thursday.
City officials have long tried to bring a mall that would rival centers in Thousand Oaks and the San Fernando Valley.
Most malls have movie theaters as part of the development, but Councilwoman Barbra Williamson said a theater could not serve as an anchor for any mall.
