A Jewel of an Exhibit on Faberge’s Creations

Hundreds of Peter Carl Faberge’s exquisite creations will go on display next month in what’s billed as the largest exhibit ever featuring the jeweler to the czars.

About three-fourths of more than 1,000 pieces in the show in Wilmington, Del., are by Faberge, according to Robert Steven Bianchi, director of academic and curatorial affairs at Broughton International Inc., the St. Petersburg, Fla., company that organized the exhibit. The balance is by Lalique, Cartier, Tiffany and other Faberge contemporaries.

About 10 of 50 imperial Easter eggs produced by Faberge for the czars’ wives will be shown, Bianchi said. But much of the show’s strength relies on its breadth, he explained. There are hundreds of cigarette cases alone, plus opera glasses, cuff links, clocks, floral miniatures, silver art objects and more spread over 10 galleries. They were drawn from more than 30 sources, including the Forbes Magazine Collection, the State Hermitage Museum and Moscow Kremlin Museums of Russia and European royalty.
