2 Planes Land Safely Despite Midair Bump

Two single-engine airplanes performing acrobatic maneuvers over Fullerton on Sunday night had a minor midair collision but managed to land safely, authorities said.
The incident happened at 6:50 p.m. near Fullerton Municipal Airport, said Louis Diaz, an operations officer for the Federal Aviation Administration. No one was injured, he said.
The planes--a Cessna 172 and a Pitts Special biplane--were “flying in formation” when they bumped into each other, Diaz said. During the collision, the Cessna’s propeller grazed the biplane’s vertical stabilizer, he said.
The pilots were in communication with each other throughout their flight, Diaz said. “I don’t know if they were part of any acrobatic team. But it looks like they were practicing to be on one,” he said.
Diaz said the incident will be investigated by the FAA.
