3,000 Fight a Dozen Fires Across Nation
About 3,000 firefighters were battling to control a dozen blazes throughout Greece that have scorched villages, forests and fields and killed seven people since last week. From the country’s northern Balkan borders to the southern Peloponnesus peninsula and the Ionian Sea island of Corfu, wildfires have ravaged thousands of acres. At least 10 villages have been evacuated, and Greece has asked for help from abroad. Government spokesman Dimitris Reppas said arson was suspected in a number of the blazes.
