USC Cruises to an Easy Win Over Georgia State

Senior outside hitter Janae Henry had just nine kills and 13 digs, but both were team highs for the USC women’s volleyball team as the Trojans cruised to a 15-2, 15-4, 15-3 victory over Georgia State in a Pacific Region first-round match at Lyon Center.
USC (27-2) will face Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in tonight’s second round at 6 p.m. San Luis Obispo defeated South Florida, 15-11, 13-15, 15-13, 15-12, in another first-round match.
USC freshman middle blocker April Ross tied Henry with nine kills and also added eight digs.
Georgia State (28-10) hit only .094 as a team.
Pepperdine d. Fairfield, 15-4, 15-9, 14-16, 17-15--The Waves were a point away from closing out the match in the third game and needed to overcome a determined challenge from the Stags in the fourth before winning their Mideast Regional first-round match at Malibu.
Stacy Rouwenhorst had 21 kills for Pepperdine (24-6), while Jennifer Fopma had 19 and Lisa Borom 16. Joanne Saunders had 27 and Conny Paul 25 for 13th-seeded Fairfield.
The fourth-seeded Waves will face fifth-seeded Kansas State in a second-round match at 7 tonight at Firestone Fieldhouse. Kansas State defeated Loyola Illinois, 15-7, 15-4, 6-15, 15-9 in another first-round match.
Long Beach State d. Santa Clara, 9-15, 15-17, 15-9, 15-10, 19-17--Tayyiba Haneef had 36 kills and Cheryl Weaver added 27 as the 49ers (24-7) overcame an 0-2 deficit in games to stun the Broncos (27-5) at Santa Clara in a second-round West Region match.
