Students Get Ready for Comedy Review

Share

Rehearsals are underway at Santa Susana High School for next month’s “Got Comedy?”--the third annual comedy review of improvisation and song parodies.

The review will provide students at the performing arts magnet school a chance to compete in impromptu comic situations, said drama teacher Peggy Albrecht.

“Two things set this show apart from any other that I’m aware of,” Albrecht said. “The actors in the improvisational comedy troupe are as good as any adults I’ve seen or worked with anywhere. And it’s the only production of its kind that I’ve seen that features musical spoofs. It’s not your typical show.”

Santa Susana Improv Comedy is made up of professional, semiprofessional and amateur actors, ages 14 to 19. The troupe makes everything up on the spot based on audience suggestions, and every show is different.

The comedy skits planned for the three performances of “Got Comedy” will poke fun at Starbucks, cosmetic surgery, disco music, daytime talk shows and dating nightmares. The troupe will also skewer popular television shows such as “Dawson’s Creek” and “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” and will lampoon singers Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion and Cher.

The show will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 6 at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza’s Scherr Forum Theater, 2100 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks.

Additional performances will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 12 and 13 at the school, 3570 E. Cochran St., Simi Valley.

Tickets are $10 general and $6 for students. Plaza tickets can be purchased through Ticketmaster or by calling the box office at 583-8700. School tickets will be sold at the door.
